Every Massachusetts winter has that week: snow on the roofs, temperatures bouncing around freezing, and icicles growing like stalactites off the eaves. The icicles look picturesque. The ridge of ice they hang from — the ice dam — is quietly forcing meltwater backward under your shingles and, in bad cases, into your walls and ceilings.
Ice dams are one of the most common causes of winter water damage in New England homes, and also one of the most preventable. Let’s take it question by question.
What Exactly Is an Ice Dam?
An ice dam forms in three acts:
- Heat escapes from your living space into the attic, warming the upper roof surface above freezing even in cold weather.
- Snow melts on that warm upper roof and runs down the slope as water.
- The water refreezes when it reaches the eaves — the overhangs, which sit outside your heated walls and stay cold. Ice builds into a ridge, and the next round of meltwater pools behind it.
Shingles are designed to shed water flowing down, not to resist water pooling and pushing up the slope. Once a pond forms behind the dam, water works under the shingles and into the roof deck. That’s when you see stains at the top of exterior walls, drips at window heads, or peeling paint come spring. Why Is New England Ice Dam Country?
The recipe requires snow that sticks around plus repeated freeze-thaw swings — precisely our winter. Add nor’easters that drop a foot of snow at a time, older housing stock with under-insulated attics (looking at you, beautiful Victorians of Newton and Wellesley), and complex rooflines full of valleys where ice loves to collect, and you get a region where nearly every roofer spends February on ice dam calls.
What Actually Prevents Ice Dams?
The permanent fixes attack the root cause: heat reaching the roof. The supporting measures manage snow and protect the vulnerable zones. Most homes benefit from a combination.

A few notes on that table. Ice and water barrier along the eaves is required by Massachusetts code on new roofs for good reason — but it’s a membrane under the shingles, so it can only be added when the roof is replaced. And professionally installed ice melt systems are a genuinely useful tool for chronic trouble spots — north-facing eaves, shaded valleys, low-slope sections — where insulation improvements alone can’t fully solve the geometry.
Don’t overlook the humble gutter, either. Gutters don’t cause ice dams, but gutters packed with fall leaves give ice a head start and hold meltwater against the fascia. Clean, well-pitched gutters going into winter remove one variable.
How Do You Fix One Safely?
Carefully — and mostly not yourself. Here’s the honest hierarchy:
Safe for homeowners: Using a roof rake with a long extension pole, from the ground, to pull snow off the first few feet of roof after storms. That’s it. That’s the whole homeowner toolkit, and it’s genuinely effective when done consistently.
Not safe, and often damaging: Climbing a ladder in winter to chip ice with a hatchet, hammer, or ice pick. Every year this breaks shingles, tears gutters off, and — far worse — puts homeowners in the emergency room. Ice-covered ladders and frozen roof edges are treacherous even for pros. Rock salt is also a poor idea: it can corrode flashing and fasteners and kill the plantings below.
Call a professional for: Steaming off an active dam (low-pressure steam melts ice without harming shingles), diagnosing why dams keep forming, interior leak assessment, and any work that involves leaving the ground. If dams recur every winter, that’s your roof telling you something about attic heat loss — worth a proper evaluation rather than another season of buckets.

The best time to solve ice dams is when there’s no ice on the roof — summer and fall, when ventilation work, insulation upgrades, ice melt cable installation, and eave protection can all be done properly.
